This Hunters Hill residence had a number of major spatial problems at the outset, reflecting common frustrations experienced by owners of small-scale properties:

The Bathroom & Laundry "Cramped Syndrome": Originally, the laundry area was combined with the bathroom. This made an already small bathroom even smaller, with comfort and everyday use visibly compromised. Homeowners could often be found attempting to maneuver around tight spaces, with the doing of laundry interfering with personal hygiene.
Designating the "Underutilized" Under-Stair Study Nook: The area below the stairs was to be used as a study. The narrow, dark, and confined nature of this space meant that an efficient or comfortable workspace could not be achieved. The subjects complained about feeling stifled and lacking inspiration while working there, having limited views that blocked concentration. This area, in essence, was a wasted functional segment because it did not live up to its potential.

Due to these pain points, the design team of Secasa Home analyzed the trouble spots and came up with an innovative yet practical renovation plan; the under-stair area had to be redesigned to enhance the functionality and livability of the entire residence.

Our core design philosophy focused on the complete makeover of the impractical under-stair study into a hidden laundry room that seamlessly integrates aesthetics with utility. At the same time, we relocated and optimized the study function to realize many gains in spatial efficiency.

★ 2.1 The Under-Stair Laundry: From "Awkward" to "Accent"

Bidding adieu to the dark old study, the under-stair space took on a new lease of life as a highly integrated, contemporary laundry area. We skillfully integrated the washing machine, dryer, and other utilities into bespoke timber cabinetry, which had the following advantages:

Maximum Utilization of Space, Hidden Design: The washing machine and dryer were perfectly fitted into the sloped under-stair cavity through precise measurement and custom fabrication. When the cabinet doors are closed, the laundry area becomes completely hidden, blending seamlessly with its surroundings. It keeps a clean and cohesive aesthetic, solving the visual clutter that usually comes with traditional laundry rooms.
Integrated Functions and Optimized Features:
- → Golden Faucet Wash Basin: Compact and elegant black wash basin is complemented by a chic gold arched faucet; not only does this serve functional needs of convenient pre-treatment and hand-washing, but it also presents a bold visual focal point through its unique form and material that elevates the space from a utility room with an air of modern luxury.
- → Artistic Splashback: The back wall features a distinctive pebble-textured tile as a splashback. It effectively serves its purpose of protecting the wall surface from water splashes but also, due to its natural texture and tactile quality, lends the whole area much artistic flair and interest, elevating what could otherwise be a nondescript practical feature into a design statement.

The LED strip lighting is ingeniously installed beneath the overhead cabinet in the washing area. It provides ample and uniform illumination to the countertop, increasing its usability manifold. Simultaneously, the soft glow of the light adds to the warmth and hospitality that elevates the overall design and feel of the laundry room.
Ample and Flexible Storage: Next to the laundry area, we designed a tall cabinet with multiple tiers of adjustable shelves. These bespoke storage solutions are ideal for organizing detergents, cleaning supplies, and essentials. The inclusion of adjustable shelves offers great flexibility, as it allows homeowners to customize the heights of shelves to hold items of different sizes, ensuring efficient organization and maintaining a clutter-free environment.

Improved Aesthetics: By using light timber-look finishes-oak tones-similar to the rest of the house's design, with white cabinetry that matches the walls, this laundry area blends effortlessly into the open-plan living space. No longer is it an awkward intrusion; instead, it is an elegant, modern addition.

★ 2.2 The Sunlit Study: Boosting Productivity and Well-being

We freed the cramped under-stair study and positioned it ingeniously near the back yard entrance. That strategic move brought multiple benefits, making this workspace radically different:

Abundant natural light flows in through the big sliding glass doors, banishing dimness and a feeling of claustrophobia from the area that used to lie under the stairs. One can work and directly experience the rich greenery of the backyard with an open sky. It greatly uplifts one's mood, helps dissipate work fatigue, and increases concentration. A necessary touch to such a home office is an interconnection with nature.
An open and comfortable environment: the design of the new study is more open and connected with the living room space in order to avoid an oppressive feeling of the small, isolated room.
Design-forward and storage-ready, the new study space is about more than just functionality.
- ✓ Custom Floating Desk: A minimalist floating desk design was chosen, which saves space on the floor and makes it look light and modern, easy to clean, and perfectly fits into a minimalist style.
- ✓ Wall Shelves: Above the desk, multiple wooden wall shelves were installed. These provide additional storage for books, office supplies, or decorative items while adding architectural interest to the wall, creating a focal point that's as functional as it is beautiful.
- ✓ Storage Cabinets: Closed storage cabinets were mounted under or alongside the desk to hide the storage of files and clutter for a clean and professional workspace.

Improved general design and functionality of the house: through custom design, selected materials (like pebble texture splashback, gold faucet), and clever lighting (LED strip lighting, decorative round wall light), the visual coherence, modern appeal, and practical utility of this home were substantially improved.
